Topix crawls and categorizes breaking news from over 50,000 news sources, 24 hours a day. Our technology reads every story as it is released and then categorizes each one into one or more of the more than 360,000 news pages.

Currently, Topix has separate pages for the 30,000 US cities and towns, 5,500 public company and industry verticals, 48,000 celebrities and musicians, 1,500 sports teams and personalities, and many, many more.

But Topix does more than tell you what's happening in the world. Through our easy-to-use publishing system with a built in audience of millions, we're handing a bullhorn to anyone who wants to voice their opinion.

Sr Software Engineer

Topix is looking for experienced software engineers to join our team in Palo Alto! Software Engineers are the creative force that build and drive our success. You're not just a small cog in a big wheel here. You have a say in what gets built and how to build it.

Requirements

Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science or Math or related field.
Experience working on publicly available web sites (not intranet or tools programming).
Experience with Perl, Ruby, PHP or Python.
Experience and interest in HTML, Javascript, and related "front end" web technologies.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Self-motivated, able to contribute to product requirements - and then design, code, debug and test independently.
A desire to help product manage the areas for which you will be responsible and watch over them so that they grow and flourish.
Interest in owning a feature or capability from HTML (though not necessarily UI design) to the back-end servers.

Community Manager

Topix is a top local community web site, with more than 16 million unique visitors per month, who contribute more than 4 million forum posts per month across thousands of forums.

We're looking for a top community manager to help us grow our site.

Responsibilities

Foster community's audience & site usage
Tackle busy customer feedback queue
Stay up-to-date on trends with social media/online communities

Experience Required

Passion for, and deep understanding of, the inner workings of successful online communities
Experience with game mechanics a plus
Experience as a moderator or power user of an online community
You know Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act by heart
Sense of humor
Excellent listening & people skills
Excellent organizational & communication skills
Ability to work in a team environment with maturity and leadership
BA preferred
An interest in politics is a plus
